Amnesia creator Frictional Games has been teasing a new horror game for weeks. Today, the team has announced SOMA is coming to PC and PS4 in 2015.

"For the last three years, we have been working on a game called SOMA," creative director Thomas Grip said. "This game is by far the most ambitious and thrilling project we have ever undertaken... SOMA is meant to chill you to your core, and confront you with questions about your very existence."

Like Amnesia before it, SOMA is a first-person horror game that focuses on exploration and survival. However, unique to Frictional's latest is how sci-fi impacts the design.

"SOMA is meant to be a proper sci-fi game," Grip said on the PlayStation.Blog. "The subject that SOMA will discuss is consciousness. Personally, I find it the most profound questions that it is possible to ask. 'How can the feeling of subjective experience arise from a chunk of flesh?' Exploring this further takes us to questions such as 'Can machines be conscious?' and 'Do we have free will?' It quickly gets very disturbing, and is ideal for a futuristic horror setting. It is the kind of sci-fi that we want to make."

You can see a little bit of their man-meets-machine scares in this lengthy gameplay clip running on PS4:

I watched this video on my phone but even still the graphics and world-detail look like a huge step up from both games in the Amnesia series. Looks creepy as fuck.

      1. That was freaky as hell

      2. If that was running on a PS4 then I'm very, very impressed. The textures and the smoothness of the movement looked pretty amazing if that wasn't the PC version.

I loved Amnesia 1 so when the sequel was announced I quickly pre-ordered it. The problem was Amnesia 2 severely disappointed me; it’s as if the game creators used the typical easy button we see in most games anymore. No insanity level, infinite light sources, wtf. Do I get a cookie at the end too? That right there is how you go from an outstanding indie developer to becoming a slave to those who pay the bills. Next thing you know Frictional Games will be owned by EA and we’ll get annual versions of the same game every November!

I don’t want an interactive movie, hell I’ll play 1980s games for immersion and a decent story line. I guess that’s why my game time continuously decreases, not because I lack time but I don’t find it worth my time anymore.

Amnesia 2 was created by a different company.

That would answer that question, but it seems as if another company shouldn't be allowed to. (I know its a money thing but just seems wrong)

Chinese Room developed Amnesia 2 so Frictional could develop SOMA
