Final Fantasy producer Takashi Tokita had quite a number of games to show off for mobile devices in New York today. As part of the "Legacy" collection of games, every early Final Fantasy game will be represented on iOS and Android devices--including Final Fantasy 6.

Like the updated version of Final Fantasy 5, the upcoming port will feature enhanced graphics better suited for the HD screens of modern day phones and tablets. In addition, it will support touch-screen controls.

Before Final Fantasy 6 launches, however, there's another "Legacy" game coming to mobile. Final Fantasy 4: The After Years is a 3D remake of the 2009 sequel to the original Final Fantasy 4.

If you have any love of console RPGs at all then yes, you absolutely should get 6 at the very least. FF6 is quite often placed near or at the top of many RPG lists, even ones including modern RPGs. It has a good story, good mechanics, well-developed characters, a villain you just wish you could hate to death, and it keeps you engaged for the 80+ hours it takes to really, truly conquer it. It's awesome all around.

They're classic JRPGs from the SNES era, and as such probably some of the best "real" games you'll find on iOS.

Before they started to go down the linear rail-road story telling gameplay, FF6, was one of the closest things to an open world style RPG out of the West. To top it off the story in FF6 is still one of the best in gaming history.

FF6 is one of the best JRPG's out there. IF you have any interest in JRPG games, you most certainly should give it a try.
(linear random turn based battles but killer storyline)

FF6 has more secrets than about any other FF game as well. (12 is up there too)

Theres quite a few side quests and easter eggs. Secret uber bosses, dungeons, characters, etc.

Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI are the genre-defining japanese RPGs, no question about it. If you have any interest in or curiosity about that genre, those are the games to look into. 4 was probably the first JRPG to effectively tell a "big epic story", for better or worse. V had some of the most interesting gameplay in the genre by far, and storywise is kind of a parody of the first four games. FFVI is THE game that jrpg fans point to in defense of the whole genre. Great gameplay, excellent steampunky world with incredible art and graphics for the time, an incredible and surprising story, and probably THE best ensemble cast of characters in gaming history.

If you like other JRPGs, or are at least curious about them, these games are worth playing. If you're a die-hard western RPG fan, or otherwise wouldn't touch a JRPG, FF6 might win you over but it would probably be a tough sell.

I haven't had any issues so far with them for FF1,2,3,4. Sure maybe sometimes the character walks backwards when i didn't tell him to, but it's never affected my game. These aren't exactly twitch games.

          exactly.
I dont mind the touch controls in the FF games at all. Now something like... the Contra remake.. (although after giving it a chance its definitely designed around touch controls and i applaud them on a job well done) No Moga support is still pretty lame.

I'm actually glad they didn't go 3D. I didn't think it added anything. The 16-bit look feels more natural here to me. This is especially true since the effects and sounds aren't necessarily upgraded to go with the 3D.

It's not just about updated graphics. The default difficulty for FF4 (plus the option for Hard difficulty) in the upgraded version was a massive upgrade over playing the SNES version. I loved that you actually needed to use the buffs and debuffs, etc, as opposed to just auto-attacking and face-rolling through the game. FF6 deserves the same love and treatment.

Besides, if you want to play the original it's pretty easy to do so. Why not get a new version instead?

if done well i would love a decent budget remake of 6. As long as people arent expecting "the same game" it would do well. Same with 7..

Not so sure how id feel about a DS style 3d remake of 6. I wouldnt want it NOT to be made, neway.

One thing a polygon remake of FF6 would do is force animations of some of those lame "in-battle cutscenes" in FF6. They work okay in those first parts of the game with the comic relief stuff, but the release of the espers oh god I'm spoiler-tagging a nearly 20-year-old game and some of the big plot moments that happen after that, just having sprites jump around and fly across the battle screen limply in the same amount of time (or more) that it would take for a cutscene to play kinda takes away from that experience.

I think I'd still prefer a high-res sprite version, though. I think a polygon version, in the style they did with FF3&4, would take away from the artistic appeal of FF6.

I really enjoyed playing through FF4 DS. I didn't care for the new Augment system, but the battles and boss fight changes were great. I've played through the SNES, PS1, and GBA versions multiple times, and the DS version put me on my ass when I used the same boss fight strategies. It made the game fresh.

And like you said, it was one of the first FF games ever where buffs and debuffs actually made the difference between a win and a loss.

Matrix Software does a great job on those remakes IMO. I really wish Square Enix would get them to get cracking on 5 and 6 remakes.

I hated the DS version of FFIV, traded it in. It was just way too damn hard.

Look, I'm glad the people like you who already knew the game inside out liked it, I can see how you would appreciate the ramped-up challenge. But Square Enix badly failed all the people who wanted to play the game for the first time on the DS. Adjustable difficulty settings wouldn't have been so hard to implement and it irritates me that they didn't do that.

I'm going to give it another go on iPad because I've read that they've added an easier mode to that version. Hopefully it will be more accessible this time.

FWIW, I'm no RPG noob, either. But the DS version seemed to be designed specifically for those that had already played FFIV a million times already and I thought that was unfairly exclusionary.

I do wish there was a "SNES" difficulty option. There is an easy mode in the ios version but I get the feeling it goes WAY too easy on you. The japanese FFIV had a good difficulty level. The DS/iOS version is great when you want a challenge though.

God the end game was stressful in that version. I actually feared the boss fights.

I'd love to see a 3d version. I've played the old one so many times. There are a few romhacks which make ff6 considerably more difficult, such as http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/707/

For me personally this is AWESOME news! Ive been on a FF kick lately. (atm working on my 99 + Onion Knight in FF3) and am desperate to play FF6 next but unsure of which version to play. SNES edited (DS shitty sound quality + edited) PS1 none edited but load times, and whatever else makes it not as good.

So hopefully this will be THE DEFINITIVE ver. of FF6 and i wont even need an EMU to play it.

It can't possibly be the definitive version if the original creators (Sakaguchi, Amano, Uematsu, etc.) aren't involved.

They're changing the graphics, they're probably changing the music too, to make it sound more "orchestral" and less 16-bit. So aesthetically it will be a completely different game. The original on SNES was incredible, and remains so to this day...

        ... tired of fucking remakes

          October 9, 2013 9:09 PM

Yes and no. The GBA version has the best translation, and a bunch of other little improvements that give the game considerably more polish. But the audiovisuals take a hit.

The GBA has lower resolution, so the game is cropped. Also they washed out the color palette to compensate for those playing without a backlight. The soundtrack is also dumbed down due to the inferior capabilities of the GBA sound chip.

If you play on an emulator you can hack the ROM to fix the colors and restore the original soundtrack, though there's nothing you can do about the resolution.

Hopefully the iOS version will be "no compromises" as they don't have to work with the limitations of the GBA.

Considering we play (well, I do) in such small spurts these days, I kinda wish they would tweak the game enough to remind where I was going next after putting the game down for a day or two. This is the problem I keep running into with the first FF3 remake on my phone. I kept forgetting where I needed to go next after I got to the desert section. I finally had to download a walkthru just to read through on what I think I'd done already.

That business about tweaking the battle system to reduce grinding - FFVI is one of the easiest Final Fantasy games. You don't need to grind unless you really want all the magic. I really hope they simply mean the end game grinding - but even then you don't need to be that high for the final boss.
