Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade MMORPG announced

A MMORPG set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe has been announced at E3 for PC, Xbox One and PS4 but, er, it's probably not what you're expecting. WH40K: Eternal Crusade will see the Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks and Eldar duking it out in a "persistent online war" to control a planet, and all sounds quite PlanetSide-y. The surprising part is that it's from Behaviour Interactive, developer of Wet and Naughty Bear.

"Thousands" of players will duke it out over locations and resources in "truly massive conflicts", Behaviour says, on foot and in vehicles like Rhino APCs, Predator tanks and Battlewagons. It'll be a third-person, over-the shoulder affair and mention of "precision gunplay" (as well as melee with "excruciating finishers") suggests combat may be based more on skill than stats.

Darksiders developer Vigil Games was once working on a more-conventional 40K MMORPG named Dark Millenium Online. This later became a single-player RPG as owner THQ struggled and then, well, THQ went down, taking Vigil and Dark Millenium with it.

Honestly, a territory control eternal war sort of game sounds the perfect form for a 40K MMORPG, but coming from Behaviour? That's quite curious. Still, it seems confident it can pull this off.

"Eternal Crusade's team are all MMO development veterans and with the support of Behaviour's 20+ years of experience this is going to be the online Warhammer 40,000 universe game that fans have been dreaming of for years!" Behaviour's Miguel Caron said in the announcement. Huh!

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is slated to launch for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in "late 2015." Sadly no screenshots or trailers accompanied the announcement, only a logo.

wow, this developer has an absolutely abysmal record. seems like everything they do is just a cash in liscensed game, or a horrible port of other horrible games. i mean, they do have 20 years of experience, but its 20 years of being the worst kind of game developer making the worst games.

MMO seems to be such an elastic term anymore for anything that has a persistent world. I mean Planetside 2 and minecraft could be considered MMOs

Neither of those games required the developer to make hundreds of hours of RPG PvE content. Ive never seen a fantasy MMO that didnt have that

what if the game was just tons of battlegrounds with very little pve content ?

Then it would be APB or the RvR side of GW2.

Nordic Games already bought the Darksiders IP and are making another game in the series.

Yeah. Unless some major publisher is backing this game I think a huge AAA effort like this from a largely unproven developer is far more likely to end in tears and a cancellation.

The only guys i trust with Warhammer is Relic so far every thing they do with the IP has been great and this MMO sounds like its going to be Space Marine but with persistent online maps.

I fear this will flop due to the choice of Dev's working on it i do not think Behaviour Interactive will be able to do a bad job on the game never mind been able to do a good one.

This sounds awesome at first. WH40K done in the style of Battlefield/Planetside is what THQ and Vigil should have attempted with the franchise and not the traditional MMO that Dark Millenium looked to be.

However, Behaviour Interactive? Wet and Naughty Bear aren't anywhere near the scale and complexity of this project. I don't have a lot of faith in that developer given their past work. This project should have gone to someone like Relic.

Also, a projected release date of 2015? Logo only with not even a screenshot tells this game is in the very early development phase and little more than a concept on a whiteboard so a projected release date of 2015 will likely turn into a release date of 2016 or maybe even 2017. I think it's a very, very bad sign to announce a game of this scale so early. It stinks of desperation more than anything else. I love WH40K and the concept of this game is something I have wanted for over a decade but the cynic in me says this game will never see the light of day and even if it does it's likely to suck.

Finally, who is funding this game? Who is funding Behaviour Interactive?
