Square Enix may be making a sequel to a subsequel of a sequel, but there's still not enough Final Fantasy in this world. To help address this crippling deficit, it'll release its "remastered" versions of PlayStation 2 FF games Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 on PlayStation 3 and Vita later this year.

Squeenix announced the FF X remaster way back in 2011, and word of the FF X-2 revamp came from a Japanese magazine earlier in the week, but was only officially confirmed today for a western release. Also news is that they'll be released some time in 2013.

On PlayStation 3, they'll both come together on one disc in the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, but the two games will be separate releases on Vita.

"These games are classic fan-favorites, and we hope that new and old Final Fantasy fans can experience the world of Spira and the story of Tidus and Yuna in a brand-new light with these remastered editions," FF X and X-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase said in the announcement.

Check out these remaster screenshots and these PS2 shots for comparison.

I like how they remastered X and X-2 but not VII or VIII.....jerks. Screw Tidus!

The remaster stuff is all PS2/PSP games, I don't think anyone has done PSX games ever when there was one in the series (see MGS HD collection).

PS2 art assets can be spruced up and run on current hardware. PS1 assets would have to be re-created from scratch, and that's expensive.

Slim chance, but hopefully they offer dual audio options. I played a FFX undub version and it's one of those games that is actually a lot better as the English dub and cast selection was pretty poor FFX.

Also I'd really like to know if these are based on the International version which added a bunch of new content to both games that North America never saw. X-2 in particular had entire new areas and soundtrack additions.

To say I am excited would be a major understatement. And very nice to see the side by side shots. Oh how things have changed in the last 10 years. Day 1 pick up for me for sure.

seriously tho, why the heck havent they remade the 7-9, shouldnt be that hard to recreate with a ps2 technology or just make it from the newer engines in ps3 as the story is already set and the selling of any of those is a quaranteed sell... maybe they are sparing those for worse days ahead if they get some financial problems after a sequal based on a sequals sequal and so on

Because 7 is overrated, 8 was not beloved, and nobody played 9.

It would be neat if there was someway to incorporate old saves. Too bad it's most likely treated like a completely different game. =[
