DayZ overhauled health system, zombies detailed

The DayZ standalone team detailed several of the new and overhauled systems coming to the game, including a new health system, smarter zombies, trash, and more.

The DayZ standalone is still without a release date. To sate those hungering for new info, the team released details on various new and revised systems coming for the standalone version, including a health system overhaul, various changes to zombie behaviors, and the addition of trash.

A blog post outlines the changes. The revised inventory system will support crafting, interchangeable clothing, degradation, and weapon customization. Zombies will boast better pathfinding, and the studio has made them a bit slower to compensate for the improved movement. Zombies are also going to be spawning directly on the server side, which also dictates their movement, allowing for better security and allowing for the team to eventually build in zombie migration patterns.

The health system is also getting an overhaul, expanding to a general health stat, blood, and level of consciousness. The blog doesn't go into detail, but hints that the three are interconnected; for example, poor diet will impact your long-term health eventually. You'll also have to dig more thoroughly for loot, and consuming goods will produce rubbish like empty bean cans. If someone clever is looking for you, they can rely on your trash to track you down. Finally, the team is continuing work on the Chernarus expansion, consisting of two new villages for "a true city feeling."

"We know that you want it released, and we know you want to know when this will be - but we're 100% committed to making this a great game, and that means we are making sure to do things properly," the blog states. "We're happy and confident about the progress, so it's one foot after another and soon we'll be at the finish line."

It sounds like they are taking the right path with this. They could have done a quick stand-alone game which was basically just a cleaned up version of the mod, but it sounds like they are going a bit more ground-up on this one, which is great.

Yeah they were originally planning on having it out before the end of 2012 then went back and decided to get a lot more low level.

So, is this standalone version using the Arma 3 engine? Or still stuck with the horrible movement/control of Arma 2?

        Not ARMA 3

I think Rocket called it Arma 2.5. It has some of the stuff used in Arma 3 but not all.

I definitely wish they'd lift the improved shooting and controls.

Now that people have touched Arma 3, they can't not have the controls in Day Z. It won't go over well.

Except the heli control scheme on the controller.

True but the scheme they changed it too isn't good at all. It's not so much the feel as the layout. The one they went with for ARMA 2 was perfect as far as the helicopter goes.

I'm hoping it has at least ARMA3's movement. I'm guessing they're not using full ARMA3 because the system requirements are too high, and they want to sell a buttload of copies.

2.5ish...but it will still have the janky-ass movement and feel of ArmA 2.

Ya, I hear ya. ArmA 2's controls + feel is a huge turn-off. That being said I'm still looking forward to it because DayZ is so damn awesome.

I really hope this isn't the next Natural Selection 2 in terms of development time. At least NS2 turned out well.

Alien commander was a huge deal breaker. Aside from that, I don't know if its nostalgia, but the overall feeling is more lifeless. I also think the balancing sucks.

have you played since the last patch (gorgeous update), came out a couple of weeks ago? it seems like marines win way more often now. while the game isn't perfect, the developers have been releasing lots of updates and seem to really listen to the community, a rarity these days.

its kind of a too-little too-late thing for me. Just so turned off at launch. Maybe I'll give it a shot after another big patch or two.

At least this will have playable Beta access so it won't just be a wait and see situation. They already have community members testing with them.
