Nintendo offers free game with 3DS XL and game purchase
Registering a 3DS XL and either Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity between March 21 and April 30 will net you a free download of another 3DS game.
If you were already in the market for a 3DS XL, Nintendo has pinpointed exactly when you should buy one to get the best bang for your buck. The company announced a new promotion today, netting you a free game download code if you purchase a 3DS XL and either Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity between March 21 and April 30.
Buying those two items and registering them on Club Nintendo will net you a download code for one of five games: Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, Star Fox 64 3D, or Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!. You kind of already said it yourself. It has some great games already: Ghost Recon (plays like X-Com), Super Mario 3D Land (one of the best Mario games I've played), OOT, Fire Emblem and Monster Hunter 3 coming out in a little while. And there is only more coming in the future. It's a good system which a lot of promise in the future (which is more than can be said for the Vita - which is maybe even a better system but with zero future).
