New Rayman Legends demo coming to Wii U as apology for delay

Ubisoft is offering something of an olive branch to disgruntled Wii U fans, who must wait an additional seven months for Rayman Legends.

In spite of being nearly complete with the Wii U version of Rayman Legends, Ubisoft delayed the game from February to September--a seven month wait for gamers that are already hungry for new content. Wii U owners were even more frustrated when Ubisoft admitted that the delay was solely to accommodate the just-announced PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.

"There are no issues with the game development," Ubisoft PR specialist Sarah Irvin admitted. "The only reason for the delay is to release on multiple platforms."

"We usually release all of our platforms simultaneously (aside from PC). We've made special exception sometimes in the past but it's definitely just on a case by case basis and not our standard practice," Irvin told Digital Spy. "In this case, Ubisoft recently decided they wanted to release the game on multiple platforms so the decision was made to launch them all at the same time rather than separately."

However, the publisher is offering something of an olive branch to disgruntled Wii U fans. "Thanks for all your feedback regarding Rayman Legends in all of its forms," Ubisoft's Facebook page says. "We understand your frustration and that you want to get your hands on the game." IGN reports that the publisher is prepping an exclusive demo for Wii U, to release "soon." But will that appease gamers that have already been playing the previous demo for weeks now?

A delay from 3 months to 10 months is really disappointing. This was part of the reason why I was interested in getting the Wii U at launch as my girlfriend and I enjoyed Origins a lot...

I hope whatever deal Nintendo made pays off for them.

I still don't understand why they won't release the WiiU version since it's done. Makes perfect sense to get the game out now and get the positive reviews going (and some revenue for the long development cycle) so when it comes out at the end of the year on the other platforms, it has a buzz going. I can't see any legit reason to delay the WiiU release. I wonder how the development team feels about all of this...

I hope they don't strip out all of the stuff that used the controller so it works on other consoles.

so that when it comes out for the 150 million 360/PS3 owners it's a big new release instead a port of a many months old game with used Wii U copies lying around. And the Wii U version ends up of higher quality.

It will still be a big release for X360/PS3 since it was not previously available to those folks assuming they didn't have a WiiU which they woouldn't because they had to wait to play the game on X360/PS3... so what difference would it make if there are used copies available? The point is that those who don't own a WiiU will still be able to play it. They gain nothing by making WiiU owners wait an extra 6 months for a game they already announced for March. In my opinion, it makes Ubi look bad because they can't meet their release dates. Any development time spent in the next 6 months will not benefit the WiiU version at all; it's done. The extra time is simply for the ports. All they're doing is needlessly punishing WiiU owners.

The biggest return on investment for the title will be found on the 360 and PS3 platforms, and that will only happen with a big marketing push. A big marketing push will only happen for the initial release of a title, never for a platform "port" 6+ months down the line. This title was never going to be hugely profitable on the Wii-U so the Wii-U gets to wait and piggyback on the marketing of the 360 and PS3 versions.

So will they sell more total copies on all systems if they release it at the same time? They must believe that at least.

They almost add insult to injury with this.

I bet they looked at how the WiiU is performing and decided they had to release it on other platforms to make money. They are just holding the WiiU batch up the marketing splash.

No. Great sales or not, it's a new system. They knew what they were in for. There's always a period right after launch where sales aren't so hot. It's a wonder they didn't make this choice in the first place.

I've always thought that they would port it to other systems, eventually. But not BEFORE releasing it on Wii U, which would give them the opportunity to shine during launch...
