Last week, Nintendo announced that Virtual Console functionality was coming to Wii U. To mark the event, Nintendo is releasing seven games for 30 cents apiece, at a rate of one per month.

The Virtual Console release list (via Destructoid) is as follows:

  • Balloon Fight (NES): Wed, 1/23 to Thu, 2/21

  • F-Zero (SNES): Wed, 2/20 to Thu, 3/21

  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES): Wed, 3/20 to Thu, 4/18

  • Kirby's Adventure (NES): Wed, 4/17 to Thu, 5/16

  • Super Metroid (SNES): Wed, 5/15 to Thu, 6/13

  • Yoshi (NES): Wed, 6/12 to Thu, 7/11

  • Donkey Kong (NES): Mon, 7/15 to Tue, 8/13

The Virtual Console functionality is slated to launch sometime in the spring. The Wii U will let you play VC games on the GamePad itself, and interact with Miiverse communities. If you already own a VC game on the Wii, you'll be able to upgrade to the Wii U version for a discounted price of $1 for NES games, or $1.50 for SNES games.

        That's not the only 7 games they're offering, that's a special sale that carries a $0.30 price.

It's all licensing I'm sure. Some publishers are probably wanting to charge way more than they need to.

It's not Nintendo; they have to work with the people who own the actual games, and those people don't want their title lost in a sea of hundreds - they know their best bet for selling is going to happen if they're the featured game some week in a small set.

I can buy a legacy game on my PS3 right now and freely transfer it to both my PSP or PSVITA for no extra cost.

Charging that amount for each NES / SNES games to be able to play them on the tablet is frankly BULLSHIT.

That's not why they're charging, you're getting things like tablet mode, save states, and way better buttong reconfiguration in there as well. The charge is for development time. You could play all the games you bought on the Wii on the Wii U right now if you go in to Wii mode, for free.

          He said it's BULLSHIT.

I mean, hey, you spend 9.99 and get the same old shit with no upgrades at all on PSN, and that's the way he likes it. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT TO SPEND A BUCK FIFTY AND HAVE FUNCTIONALITY OF YOUR NEW HARDWARE TO BOOT?

Those upgrade prices were what I was thinking they should have been pricing the original classics on the VC in the 1st place. Nice to know if I ever buy a Wii U I can re buy Donkey Kong (NES version with the missing level again!) for $1.

If they priced old NES games at that price in the 1st place I'm betting people would have bought lots of games in the VC, at the original pricing I'd bet there are games up there that they got purchased.
