Dead Space 3 to include microtransactions

Dead Space 3 will feature microtransactions, letting the player fork over some real money for the in-game currency to shortcut weapon crafting.

Video games have been seeking out new revenue streams, giving birth to the microtransaction model. EA has been forging ahead in this regard, including hooks in games like Mass Effect 3 and the Madden series. Dead Space 3 will be also getting its own form of microtransactions, to shave off time for impatient weapon crafters.

Eurogamer reports that the resources needed for weapon crafting, such as material and scrap parts, can be obtained through a few different methods. You could pick up the parts directly in the game, scavenger bots can be sent out to gather in-game currency to buy the parts, or you can use real money to buy in-game currency packs as a shortcut.

Associate producer Yara Khoury said that several packs of the in-game currency will be available to purchase at varying amounts, but you won't be able to buy your way to the best gun right from the start. "There are a lot of weapon parts that are only available to buy later in the game," she said. "Unless you're playing through it again [on New Game Plus]."

What a fucking travesty. You buy a $60 game that includes all content, but you can't access all said content unless you play the game AGAIN after completion, or you spend beyond your $60 initial purchase.

I can't wait until Mirror's Edge 2 comes out, with it's 3 hour single player story campaign, drop in drop out co-op, nonstop HUD cues on how to play / where to go, coin-collecting power ups to help you jump faster, and de-emphasis on parkouring over straight up combat.

Many games require multiple playthroughs to acquire "all content." That's what New Game+ is for. The real trick is making sure legitimate players aren't at a disadvantage because they choose to come by the content organically rather than break out a credit card.

Great...next thing you know, EA will be trying to ban forever anyone that edits their savegame, since they can now claim it as theft.

Although this franchise has veered far from its origins, I'm not bothered by this addition/change. In the previous two games you had to play through more than once to fully upgrade gear. They're now just letting you upgrade a little sooner. And, you don't have to purchase it and it doesn't mean you're getting less than what you paid for.

That's true but at the same time every time I play a game with paid "shortcuts" to unlocks I can't shake the feeling that the developers have been tempted to make said unlocks take longer.

In the time I've played both Tribes Ascend and PS 2 I never unlocked a single weapon. They may as well have not been in the game for me.

It makes sense. Once you add something like this, as a business you now have incentive to make unlocking things take longer as it'll increase the chance of people shelling out money to do it sooner.

Have you ever played a Dead Space game? I didn't unlock all the upgrades until roughly halfway through New Game+ in Dead Space 1, 2, or the iOS game. Adding paid shortcuts might compel EA to draw that time out by a tad, but it still took a while to begin with.

I've played through the first Dead Space, and I had all the upgrades I needed by the end of my one and so far only play through. Yes, there aren't enough resources to upgrade literally all your equipment to its max, but isn't that kind of the point? It forces you to make decisions on what you feel needs upgrading based on your play style. I see that as a good thing.

That's my point, yeah. You're not SUPPOSED to max out your character in one playthrough.

ME3 multiplayer had a similar feature though that was only in the multiplayer portion. If this is the way EA management wants to make money, I'm sure there's people willing to pay.

The only thing that bugs me is that this is supposed to have some modicum of resource management as a deadspace game right? Or have they taken the Survival action and made the survival portion even more vestigial.

      *doesn't buy it at $60*

But seriously, if you don't want to do it, don't do it. Just like every other microtransaction on non-essential portions of games.

Steam isn't devaluing your games; it's this shitty DLC setup they have that is doing it.

It's a new type of horror you see; because nothing says horror, like farming for weapon parts, getting frustrated, and then stopping yourself as you suddenly notice you've put in half of your credit card number without even realizing it. "WHAT HAVE I DONE!?"

This means probably they didnt balance the resources ingame like in the previous games and probably made way less resources drop to make people pay for them.
      EA style.
