Still, Visceral's scary shooter supports that Kinect jiggery-pokery, as a new video shows off. Gasp, as the possibility of forgetting which command's button is replaced with the slower nuisance of forgetting its wording.

Visceral had considered using Kinect for interesting things like snapping photos of your terrified little face at scary moments or tracking cuss words but no, in the end it went for 'commands which are mostly quicker and easier with buttons.' Still, sharing ammo and health packs with your chum by yelling is probably easier than fighting through a menu.

Dead Space 3 is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 5, preceded by a console demo. That hits on January 22, though Xboxeers can get in a week early by signing up. Here, watch the Kinect video then check out our recent preview:

      dead space having your health/oxygen meters directly on the avatars backpack was one of the most innovative and coolest design touches. this however sounds idiotic

      The idea doesn't appeal to me, but if you're going to use voice commands, why not make them part of the experience? "Revive partner" is a command I'd give to a computer, which is exactly what I'm doing. It's not part of the experience. To perpetuate the suspension of disbelief, I'd more likely shout, "Get up!"--followed, preceded, and interrupted by any number of expletives.

        Exactly! And determine the amount of health he revives with by how forcefully you yell the command. "GET THE FUCK UP MOTHERFUCKER" = 75% health. "Stop dying noob" = 25%.

        It's not that. I can almost guarantee that it is MS asking the dev to use Kinect so MS can promote Kinect more but the developer is getting something in return as well, like free advertising on Xbox Live, money, or whatever. So the developer probably didn't seriously plan for Kinect use in their game and finds out mid project oh they have to use the Kinect for something. Shouting commands at it is the easiest way to use the Kinect and isn't a feature that non Kinect owners will care about missing so it avoids the problem of non Kinect owners being upset that they now feel forced to buy a Kinect to get the full game experience.

        So everyone wins.

        -MS can say dead space uses Kinect
        -The developers probably got something from MS and technically used the Kinect without spending much dev time on implementing it.
        -Non Kinect owners don't feel cheated for missing out on what would be considered a must have feature because the Kinect feature is lame anyway.

      Using the Kinect for shouting commands at the game is the weakest, lamest, most uncreative way to use the Kinect. Not only that but it's been done by plenty of games before starting way way back with PS2 games like SOCOM. Worse, the Xbox 360 uses a mic that people use with xbox live already so really why have a Kinect if you can just support this feature with mic that probably more people have from their Xbox Live kits they bought 7 years ago? If people were really interested in yelling commands at the TV it would have been supported on the mic for most games. But no we didn't do that because it is retarded.

      So why do it now with the Kinect? Because MS is encouraging developers to do so, probably as part of a deal for free advertising on live. So what does the developer do? They shoe horn it in their game the easiest and most uncreative way possible by using the mic instead of the camera features.

      Come on guys, try a little harder. It is the third game in the franchise.

      I'll be playing it on my PC, so kinect is irrelevant.
