The creators of Hotline Miami have decided to turn the sequel-sized downloadable content into a full-blown sequel. Studio Dennaton Games is at work on the soundtrack for the title, which already had ambitious plans when it was DLC.

"Working while listening to the sweet tunes of a preliminary Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack that we've put together during the weekend," creator Jonatan Soderstrom said on Twitter. Sodorstrom then confirmed to Eurogamer that the DLC had been expanded into a full sequel.

"Yeah, it seems like it will end up bigger (in terms of the number of levels we've got planned) than the first, so it feels reasonable to release it as a full game rather than a DLC," he said. "We've barely begun working on it though, still got things we need to patch with the first game, so that's the main priority right now." He also noted that some musicians may return for the sequel, but they're looking into featuring other bands as well. "Want to keep it fresh."

The DLC-turned-game is said to feature more characters, new stories with different angles, and possibly a map editor.

This game is so nuts. Played a few hours of it last night. It makes me feel gross and dirty and thrilled.

Except in movies or on TV you remain in a passive state and can't participate. Bit of a flawed argument there. Well, you are active when it comes to interpreting stuff of course, but you know what I mean.

Though I quite often feel the same way about games. Sometimes I want to pick up a game stripped of all the expendable elements and just have some simple and easy fun. Definitely not the only type of games I play though. Hitman: Absolution is fantastic for example and I'm sure I'll enjoy the hell out of Far Cry 3, too. However, quite often the casual gamer in me breaks out.

i think the biggest part of what he is saying is that so many game developers secretly want to be holywood directors and we are the ones who have to endure it.

Nice. Just bought the game during Steam sales and playing it makes me feel so damn awesome :D
(if only the controls felt a bit better though; I find myself making errors and dying due to control issues rather than due to skill).

The #2 track alone on the soundtrack was worth the 4eur or whatever I paid for the game. I have to say the gameplay in itself isn't all that thrilling for me, never been a fan of the mouse+kb control schema from the top down like this, and the graphics make my eyes hurt. :)
