Edmund McMillen's cult hit The Binding of Isaac is being remade by a new team courtesy of a to-be-revealed publisher. The goal is to bring the remake to consoles and PC some time next year.

"It will be a new game with all new graphics, music, etc it will also feature an expansion sized pack of all new content, bosses, characters enemies, items etc," McMillen described. In addition, the remake is expected to add local co-op.

"The remake will be more than just an expansion," McMillen said on his Formspring account (via Game Informer). "The whole game will be remade and rebalanced."

McMillen says that he is aiming to release his game on all of the platforms, and Sony has already expressed interest in having the title. Microsoft apparently also wants the game, "but only time will tell if anything gets signed." Nintendo previously refused the game, due to its religious content.

The remake will also arrive on PC, but because it is a totally different game, "there will be no compatibility" with the original release. Save files will not transfer, and a new purchase will be required to access the new content. The game will arrive in 2013 at the earliest. "The game isn't in full development yet," McMillen revealed. "I would assume if it starts soon it will probably take 9-12 months to finish."

So, I HAVE the game, but I'll need to re-buy it again to play the new levels?
Why not just release it as an expansion to the original?
Let the consoles get a new version. just update the PC version

Not to be a dick, but I don't think they could have worded that any more clearly.

They're wording is clear, but I'm not sure of the intent. is it JUST to get people to re-buy? Is it for money-hats?

Because it's a new game. Call it Binding of Isaac 2 if you have an issue

I agree that it sucks, but from McMillen's comments, this is a completely new game. The gameplay may be similar as is the story itself, but levels, graphics, etc, will be all-new. From a programmer-mindset, trying to keep things compatible, and therefor release an expansion rather than a new release, would be a nightmare, and it would _not_ be cost effective. What I'd hope is that they'll offer a discount to players who purchased the original version, but if you're looking for compatibility then it just can't happen.

This is very, very awesome! My only hope is that it's the same music composer.

Wait, what? Can anyone tell me why it's being remade? Didn't this just come out like 6 months ago or something?

Probably making it in a real programming language instead of Flash.

This. Frankly, this is great news. A full-on BOI game that includes controller support, a better engine, and other improvements is GREAT!

Wouldn't ie be far less confusing it call it a sequel rather than a remake?

I hope the collision detection/response is better in this release. It might just be me, since I've never seen anyone else complain about it, but the collisions always felt really squishy and inaccurate to me.
