The War Z producer explains world building, end-game

The War Z executive producer Sergey Titov explains his team's views on objectives and living in a zombie-infested world.

The War Z is the latest game to hit in the ongoing zombie craze. But what makes it different? Executive producer Sergey Titov explains.

"There are no quests or missions in the traditional gaming industry sense of the word," he said. "We're not building an objective based game, but instead building a sandbox with lots of tools that will allow players to create their own experiences. We took a basic theme that we love—the zombie apocalypse/survival genre-and asked ourselves what the world would look like in this scenario? What means of interacting with the world or other players would be available? What would the world economy look like? We built the game design around that."

Gold coins are the main currency in the game, but "nothing prevents you from taking ammo for guns and using it as currency when bartering." Those guns are your lifeline, and the game functions like a shooter. But Titov says the game will also have traditional melee weapons like baseball bats and knives to complement the machine guns and grenade launchers.

As for an ultimate goal, the team isn't thinking of the game with an ending in mind. "Ultimately we hope that there won't be an endgame," he told PC Gamer. "Our DNA as a company is not to produce 'packaged' games. What we're making is a sandbox service for our players. We create the toolset and set the theme for players to use and build their own individual game experiences. We don't have a goal like 'okay unlock all achievements' or 'find all guns.' We're saying, here's a world that just survived a viral outbreak that took the lives of most of the population and left a world full of brain-hungry zombies."

However, he does expect players to make their own goals with custom servers and private worlds, which could sport their own rules. "Some will do just that-building their own virtual 'strongholds' so to say and inviting other people to join as long as they are going to follow their rules. Some will band together into clans and will fight other clans—either on public or private servers."

How can something "sound" like a right balance? It doesn't exist yet.

And TBH DayZ isn't that hard to get into. It's not suppose to be casual, that's the whole reason it blew up.

Yeah I'm with you. I played it for about a week, had a blast playing. But then you die and have to run for 2 hours to get someplace again. I haven't played for awhile but each patch they add more stuff I don't wanna mess with.

Play with shackers. You'll find this a lot easier. We do pickups on the coast in cars often.

That is cus you're still playing at fairly low level. It's harsh but true.

If you think you only start having fun after reequiping yourself, then you're doing it wrong. Every time you die, you're suppose to learn something and get back into the game stronger and better.

Damn I just hours of work! Luckily I learned something!

Yea I'm sure you did just "hours of work," good for you!

The amount of "work" doesn't make you "more hitpoints!!"

It's called having an experience, and it doesn't start "hours of work" into the game.

Maybe if you learned something, you wouldn't so "noobily hours of work" next time.

What regressive thinking. Maybe you should devolve back into a fish.

Oh it's DayZ's fault you don't "win" immediately! I'm so sorry!

That's what specifically turns me off. I like stuff to work for in my open world games. No objectives = no point to play imo.

Well that's the sandbox design people love about Day Z. They end up making their own objectives due to the severity of the game design. Between bandits and the infected there's enough for people there to create their experiences.

Bringing someone 10 zombie kidneys for a shoe is boring.

I'm not saying collection quests, or fetch quests, just give the game a purpose to play.

This is one of the few games in recent times that has actually piqued my interest. I'm finding it harder and harder nowadays to find something that truly captivates my attention. I feel like this might actually be a great hit.

I like the idea of a barter system but don't like the idea of having clans. Will there be a clan tag with my nsme or any other identification to anyone ourside of my clan? If so I'll probably pass because I think it'll take a lot out of the whole anarchy and not knowing appeal found in day z.

I still think naming their game "The War Z" is intentionally misleading and I don't trust them because of it.

Yeah it seems like 'The Z War' would make way more sense but they want to take advantage of having a similar name to Day Z which is dumb.

Until they actually release the alpha/beta, it's still just another hyped up "Fable" or "Spore". Not saying I won't play it when it comes out, but I think they should tone down the hype before they make it a disappointing release.
