Final Fantasy X for Vita and PS3 is an HD 'remaster'

At the Taipei Game Show, Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto confirmed that Final Fantasy X for PS3 and Vita is a "remaster" versus a full "remake."

When Square Enix announced a "remake" of Final Fantasy X for Vita and PS3 at Tokyo Game Show, we were skeptical. "We assume it's simply an HD port of the classic title," we wrote last year.

It appears our suspicions were correct. At the Taipei Game Show, Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto confirmed that the game is a "remaster" versus a full "remake."

"It's being developed as an HD Remaster, but the visuals will be much more beautiful than before," he told GNN (via Siliconera). "Please look forward to it!"

The game was originally announced as a "remake" at TGS, so this backpedaling will obviously deflate the expectations of many Square Enix fans. At least the game is receiving some kind of facelift. Recent PS2 titles have appeared on the PlayStation Network as direct ports. Instead, Final Fantasy X will be getting the HD remaster treatment, a la ICO.

Wonder if they will re-render the cutscenes? The original are 480p 4:3 too.

I hope so! My least favorite thing about these HD remakes (God of War especially) is that the pre-rendered stuff looks terrible.

I think the early Final Fantasy games would be ruined for a lot of people if Amano's design were translated to polygon characters. The CG in some of the re-releases was bad enough if you though the men of modern Final Fantasy games looked like women.

They did a pretty good job with FF4 on DS. It was one of the best remakes I've seen from them

I think Nomura's interpretation of Amano designs would work really well in 3D. (Look at Dissidia.)

Dissidia-level graphics and general look of the characters would be perfect for a remake of either V or VI.

I thought that, and still kind of do to a degree, but the 3D remake of 4 was actually quite well done.

I'd ideally like a "remastered" HD version of 6, but still keeping the beautiful sprites. Maybe they can do the "3d backgrounds, 2d objects" thing.

I just want to see 6 again, so these VII-lovers can see why they're so wrong.

Well out every FF this isn't the one people were really hoping for. If there going to remake it to look better I hope they spend some time to make the NPC in towns less animatronic and have them move like there actually living in the world. Having the NPCs only spring to life when you talked to them bug me a lot. It was like the world was only populated by Mannequins.

Maybe they could make Blitz Ball not suck so much.

It would have been nice to make the Ultimate Weapons a little freaking easier to get. I shudder to think about how many hours of my life I wasted in college trying to do that blasted chocobo race and quick-tap lighting dodge. Watch, they will have a trophy for getting all the weapons and my Trophy compulsion will kick in and I will end up torturing myself trying to dodge freaking lighting 200 FRACKING TIMES!!

I did it in 10 minutes a few months ago using a PS2 emulator. If you load state at the start of the race, you get the same balloon layout. So basically you keep going until you get an easy layout of balloons and then keep trying it. The Lightning Strike one is the whore.

So basically it'll be a worse looking version than what has been possible on PCSX2 for the past several years.

Most HD remasters are not that good if you have a capable PC and PCSX2.

Wow, I'm actually surprised that people actually thought this was a remake...
Anytime I hear "HD remake", especially when it's a a title from last gen, you know it doesn't mean it's actually being remade.

FFX is one of those games that I never got around to playing so a HD makeover is what I was excited about anyways.

The only thing I would want other than that is to do away with random encounters, that's an old trope that should no longer exist.
