A week ago, Rockstar teased us with a glimpse of Grand Theft Auto V, but we were left with so many questions. Where and when will it take place? What new innovation makes this worthy of Rockstar's rare full numbered sequel treatment? What's with the dollar-sign five?
Today the trailer hit, and it answered some of those questions.
Our unnamed protagonist/narrator apparently moved to Rockstar's twist on Los Angeles to get away from a criminal past and raise a family, but of course, things don't work out as planned. The trailer implies several settings, from cities to mountain trails and even a brief look at a farm, so it may be taking notes from San Andreas' variety. We even see a few shots of airplanes.
Check out the trailer for yourself below.

The shots of mountains, countryside, and jets/planes have me intrigued I must say. Reminded me of San Andreas. I am definitely waiting to learn more about what sort of features and gameplay elements are in this one though, I have no desire to buy another GTA4. Now, another San Andreas? Sign me the fuck up.

It LOOKS beautiful, but how will it play? GTA4 didn't grab me gameplay-wise. It felt like like a step backwards from San Andreas. I didn't need any over-the-top ridiculousness, just lots and lots of options: full character customization, lots of side activities, developing different stats, and so forth.
San Andreas became my go-to example for awesome sandbox games, and I didn't feel that 4 offered nearly as much in that area. That's not to say I disliked 4, just that it felt like a step backwards in many fundamental ways. -

It just needs to be like this then

I played Deus Ex Human Revolution like that. My boss sent me to "investigate" the police station. On my first play through I convinced the cop at the desk to just let me in. On my 2nd play through I murdered every living soul in that precinct. And everybody outside too. I saw a newspaper later in the game that alluded to my rampage but no one else in the game seemed to care about what I had done.

Like every other GTA, I will buy it when its 7.50 on steam, go around and rape/murder/rob people for an hour, and then never touch it again. I really wish I could get into these games because the manic murder sprees are so fun. I just find the campaigns unbearable, and the storylines irritating at best.

I can understand why people might be disappointed based on how GTA 4 played out. I finished 4 and didn't really love it (I did love the two expansion packs). It kind of felt like the sacrificed some fun for realism. But I saw some stuff in this trailer that looks like a mix of San Andreas (wilderness and jets) and GTA 4 with GTA 4/RDR graphics, which sounds like a good mix to me. So count me as excited based on this trailer.
Also, I don't get why people are down so on these graphics. Yes, I understand that there are better graphics in other games, both on console and PC (especially PC). And I also agree that consoles are getting a little long in the tooth. But I thought the lighting and over all atmosphere the game shows in this trailer looks great. For my money, I don't need every little detail to be spectacular as long as they get the big picture right.
Like in RDR for example, when you skinned an animal and you could see a bush close to the camera with it's blurry, shitty texture. Did it bother me that the bush looked like crap close up? No, because when you were riding your horse or walking around, the landscape with it's lighting and atmosphere looked amazing. The term gestalt comes to mind when thinking of these graphics, and as long as they get the "whole" right I can over look some of the pieces being a bit ugly. -

10th anniversary for Vice City irl, but in game it's been over 25 years since the events of VC. Tommy would be pretty old and slow by now.
Also, is anyone else annoyed by the GTAs where the protagonist is a bad guy who decides he wants to go clean, but gets dragged back in anyway? My favorite GTA was Vice City, simply because you start out as a criminal, and at no point do you go, "Hmm, I want to give up this life and be good." No, you work your way to the top, killing and scheming the whole way. The only moral of the story is "Do unto others before they do unto you." I felt like GTA lost something in the story when SA came out... and it didn't improve with 4.

Im personally excited to return to Los Santos and the San Andreas world.
I think it will be intriguing because it seems like you start on top of the food chain, already a made man but get suckered back in to your past criminal life because the economy goes to shit and all your investments get depleted...maybe thats just me making up the story...
then again, this could be only 1 of a few stories this game tells. -

It's been a long time since a movie really surprised me, but this movie really surprised me. The inaccurately-toned trailer probably had a lot to do with it, but even without that I think I would still have been swept up into it's awesomely sparse, pseudo-noir 80's homage world. Easily one of my favorite movies of the year. If GTAV does follow the "Mann" style, it might be the first GTA I actually play (yes, I've never played one).
I still have to see Contagion, hopefully it will be coming to the 2nd-run theater near me soon so I don't have to wait for the DVD release. -
