Hopping on-board the fighting game revival, Namco Bandai has officially announced that Soul Calibur V is in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Andriasang reports that the game was announced at the "Step Up Dubai 2011" event. The game takes place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV, and more details will be coming at E3 in June. It's aiming for a 2012 launch.

The company showed off a cinematic-only teaser trailer, which introduces the new main character, Patrocles. Namco Bandai also set up a countdown site in April, which is expected to be the official Soul Calibur V site once the countdown ends today at 10 am PST.

Announcement trailers rarely have anything of substance to mull over.

That said, this particular trailer had even *less* substance than I'd expected. Sigh. Time to play the waiting game again...

Never been a huge fan of fighting games, but playing Soul Calibur was always fun. I like Lizardman. Hopefully it's good.

I just need them to bring back the SP from Soul Calibur. They do know everyone wants that back, yes?

MK raised the bar too high for SP content

Don't get me wrong, I love MK9, however it surely didn't set the bar "too" high.

while it did not set the bar that high for story telling in a game... it set it the highest ever for a fighting game. With fight night champion having a simular single player game I imagine that this game will get the same treatment

Fair enough- can't have Street Fighter and all its crossovers hogging the release lists.

Hmmmmmm. I'm hoping it can recapture the magic of SC1 & SC2. I liked SC4 well enough, but it was starting to feel a little tired I guess? I don't know. I didn't play it nearly as much as the first two games.

It's following the MK route, only it doesn't have as long to get i t right again.

SF and MK went back to basics, but SC needs to go crazy and stop being a fighting game altogether.

I thought they gave that a shot and it failed miserably.

Yea they did. I didn't play 4 but SC3 was pretty insane in terms of the make-your-own-character and pseudo-RTS single player and all sorts of wacky shit. Not that I didn't have fun with it but i'd be pretty OK with a back-to-basics focus on the gameplay and characters over all the fluff around it.

Nice. I didn't really get into 3 too much and I never played 4 but Soul Calibur 2 was probably my favorite fighting game ever. I hope this is good.

Now that Tim Langdell has been put in his place, Namco could go back to that name if they wanted to.

I can't put my finger on why, but I enjoyed Soul Edge and Soul Calibur 1 considerably more then the rest of the series, and pretty much didn't like SC4. Here's hoping they can recapture whatever it was the later games were lacking.

I really like Soul Calibur 2 on the gamecube me and my friend played the hell out of it, which is strange because we are not big fighting game fans. The absurdity of the art and animations are entertaining.

Yes. I found each title enjoyable in Versus so far. Controls and character wise SC is my absolute favorite fighting series.

I really think the series doesn't get the attention it deserves.

The combat is fluid and quite aesthetically pleasing, and the actual mechanics are intricate without being overwhelming. There's a lot more room for error and a lot more room for creativity with the lack of overly powerful combos and the like. I personally think games like Street Fighter put too much emphasis on the mechanics and the execution of those mechanics, a problem that Soul Calibur has never had (unless you were trying to do Ivy's ridiculous command throws).

The game is all about reading your opponent, which is exactly what a fighting game should be.

Whoever's in charge of marketing this game should be fired. THIS is one great example of how you do an announcement trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ7PRJOgEMw&feature=related .
