Morning Discussion

Yesterday (or this morning), Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception appeared on Jimmy Fallon's extremely late night talk show. The live-demo segment, which you can watch after the break, featured a piece of the action where Nathan and his friend Sully attempt to escape from a burning chateau.

At a certain point, Fallon becomes the first person outside of Naughty Dog to ever play the upcoming title. As Fallon struggled to aim his weapon (and even walk at one point), you could almost sense PR handlers tensing up and hyperventilating.

Also hyperventilating? Everyone who owns--or is about to own--a PlayStation 3, because we all want to get our hands on Drake's latest adventure. As soon as possible! November 1, 2011, is too far away.

    XNA/XBLIG

Hi friends. This weekend I posted a post about a game that I released on the XBox Live Indie Game store (original thread is here: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=24745247#itemanchor_24745247). Thanks to your help, it sold a few dozen copies and last night I took this picture:

Last I checked it was also in the top 5 best rated puzzle games. A small victory but I still think it is awesome. Thank you all for your help!

Well done, snot3353! Thanks again for the code! If i hadn't have got it for free, it would have been worth buying.

You prepared to release any details of your next project?

Not sure yet. Was thinking either a Contra style side scroller or a top-down shooter like Raptor. I just want to make something where I can have gigantic bosses who move in slow predictable patterns so you can explode them with laser guns. Also, something a bit more mainstream that will sell more than 5 copies.

Both those types of games are fun to play to a lot of people.

Co-op will help sell, in my opinion. My group of friends (me + 6 others) all bought I Maed a gam3 just cos it was fun for 30mins to play together.

ridiculous bosses balanced out with some ridiculous firepower never hurts either. :D

Fortunately I was able to con one of my cartoonist friends into doing the art. I suck horribly at it as well. You might want to try going the route of Hypership Out of Control or Soulcaster or other games that use simplistic 8-bit looking graphics... it's what I will probably do if/when I have to start doing my own art.

Just come up with a style that you can make work... it doesn't have to look awesome. Most of the games on XBLIG have shitty art. One of the highest rated tower defense games is literally a guys pencil sketches and "Get Rich Or Die Gaming" is the type of shit you draw in your notebook in high school but it's sold thousands. If you're trying to be a professional dev then it's one thing but if you're just doing this as a hobby and for fun, I wouldn't judge yourself too harshly.
