Wii Nears 35M Units Sold Worldwide, DS at 84M
The company has sold 10.1 million Wiis and 13.73 million Nintendo DS units in the past six months, with Nintendo elaborating that 299.85 million units of Wii software have been sold since 2006, with lifetime Nintendo DS software sales at 454.63 million.
That 84 million figure puts the Nintendo DS ahead of the previous Game Boy Advance hardware, which has sold 81.36 million units worldwide.
Rival Sony announced yesterday that its higher-priced PlayStation 3 hardware has sold 16.84 million units worldwide since its 2006 launch. Microsoft has not weighed in with worldwide Xbox 360 sales since March, when the console was at 19 million.
As for financials, Nintendo reported net sales of 836.8 trillion yen and a net profit of 144.8 trillion yen in the period between April and September 2008, a respective 10.4% and 9.4% jump over the same time last year.
However, the company lowered its overall net profit expectations by 15.9% for the fiscal year--from 410 trillion yen to 345 trillion yen--citing "strength of the yen against the dollar and the euro."
