Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite's Final Roster Missing X-Men and Other Key Characters
The rumor points out a disturbing lack of X-Men, Fantastic Four, Viewtiful Joe, and other iconic figures on both sides of the fence.
With the announcement of Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite at last year’s EVO, rumors of who will make the roster have been debated to death. However, a rumor on NeoGaf has surfaced and all our fears have been realized. Another tipster on Twitter known for breaking rumors chimed in to vet the NeoGaf post.
According to the rumor, Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite will feature 28 fighters. That roster does not appear to feature Viewtiful Joe, Ace Attorney, Final Fight or Okami characters, with the biggest news being the leak of the game having absolutely no X-Men characters whatsoever. Can’t say we’re surprised. After all Disney has input into the game's development and it would make sense for them to favor characters that would help promote popular and upcoming films for the summer to help with the box office gross. However, this is a rumor, so take it with a few Hulk-sized grains of salt.

I'm so confused about how licensing these characters works with video games. I get it from the movie standpoint: Fox has the rights to the X-Universe, mutants, and Fantastic Four (and probably some others) while Marvel Studios gets the rest (teamup with Sony for Spider-Films aside), but video game licensing is different. I'm playing 2 free-to-play iOS Marvel games, Contest Of Champions and Future Fight. CoC has characters from the X-Universe as well as Avengers and Spidey, but Future Fight is missing all things X... Including Deadpool, but not counting GWENPool which I guess is safe from whatever licensing deals are in place. Oh and I forgot about Marvel Heroes on PC and consoles! That game has X-Characters mingling with the rest of the Marvel Universe.
I guess what I'm wondering is how much of this is licensing deals and how much is Marvel having a say in who's going in their games?-
Specifically the X-men license and Fantastic Four licenses says Fox gets a significant cut of any item belonging to those universes produced. So if someone makes a game and Mr Fantastic is in it, even if it isn't related to the movie, fox gets a cut. Also any new characters created in those books automatically become available for fox to use. It was a bad deal and Marvel can't seem to get out of it though they did get Daredevil back. Marvel has 100% control of non-movie X-men and F4 license merch. So they are burying it.
Marvel Heroes has some flexibility because the contract was drawn up before Disney bought marvel and they can use the characters until 2022.
